You could say I cope with tough issues by attempting to make murky situations clearer. Whether it be an attempted book banning, cultural trends, or security threats — my instinct is to write a story.
Stories generally come from the same places: rumors, dense data sets, or my own personal curiosity. I start with the big picture and dive into research to understand the history and players involved. with a foundation of records and data and then find people to make those pivot tables tangible. See the sweat put into organizations and feel the words not being said to drive my storytelling.
I’m interested in stories that help make sense of systems and show what’s actually happening underneath the noise.
As a writer I am sarcastic, intelligent, discerning, and vivid when need be. As a reporter I am always thoughtful, empathetic, prepared, and humble to produce measured reporting that is equitable and not simply equal.
The gap between what's being said and what's actually happening is what I put on the record.
